Age verification popup

Ask visitors to confirm their age before they can browse your store. Useful for stores selling alcohol, tobacco, vaping or other age-restricted products.

The Age verification popup covers your store with a question, such as "Are you 18 years old or older?", and two buttons. Visitors must confirm their age before they can browse. It lives in the Overlay group, so it appears on every page.

  • Approve: The popup closes. It won't appear again on that browser for 30 days.

  • Decline: The popup shows your declined message. The store stays covered, and a return button lets the visitor go back to the question.

Visitors can't close the popup by clicking outside it or pressing Esc.

1. Our guide to set up an Age verification popup section:

Steps:

  • In the theme editor, click Add section in the Overlay group at the bottom of the sidebar.

  • Locate Age verification popup.

  • Turn on Enable test mode while you edit, so the popup shows on every refresh of the preview, even after you click the approve button.

  • Turn off Enable test mode before your store goes live, then click Save.

2. Section settings

  • General

    • Enable test mode: Shows the popup on every page load, and approving doesn't save. Use it only while editing.

    • Background image: An optional image that fills the screen behind the popup.

    • Blur background image: Blurs the background image so the popup stands out.

  • Age verification question

    • Heading: The popup's title, such as "Confirm your age".

    • Text: The question, such as "Are you 18 years old or older?".

    • Decline button label: The "no" button. Leave it blank to hide it.

    • Approve button label: The "yes" button.

  • Declined message

    • Heading and Text: The message shown after a visitor clicks the decline button.

    • Return button label: A button that takes the visitor back to the question. Leave it blank to hide it.

  • Colors

    • Color scheme: The popup's colors: Accent 1 / Accent 2 / Accent 3 / Background 1 / Background 2 / Background 3 / Inverse.

3. Tips

  • Always fill in Approve button label. Without it, visitors have no way into your store.

  • Set the age in Text to match the legal age for your products and the countries you sell to.

  • This popup asks visitors to confirm their age; it doesn't check ID. Check the rules that apply to your products.

  • If you clicked the approve button in the editor preview and the popup no longer appears, turn on Enable test mode.
