Email popup

Collect email subscribers with a popup that appears after a short delay, with your own heading, text, image and an optional teaser button.

The Email popup invites shoppers to join your mailing list. It appears after a short delay, in the center of the screen, full screen or in a bottom corner. Once a shopper closes it, it stays hidden for the number of days you choose. It lives in the Overlay group, so it can appear on every page.

Everyone who signs up is added to Shopify admin > Customers as a customer who accepts email marketing, tagged popup-newsletter. Where do submissions of Email signup forms go?

1. Our guide to set up an Email popup section:

Steps:

  • In the theme editor, click Add section in the Overlay group at the bottom of the sidebar.

  • Locate Email popup.

  • Click Email popup in the sidebar to open it in the preview. It closes again when you click another section.

  • When you're happy with it, set Display mode to Enable.

  • Click Save.

The section is added with a Heading, a Text and an Email form block.

2. Section settings

  • Display mode: Enable / Test mode.

    • Enable: The popup appears on each visit until a shopper closes it, then stays hidden for the Frequency you set.

    • Test mode: The popup appears on every page load. Use it only while editing.

  • Image: An image beside the content. It shows with Center or Full screen positions, and is hidden on mobile to follow Google's guidelines for popups.

  • Image focal point: The part of the image to keep in view: Center / Top / Bottom / Left / Right / Top Left / Top Right / Bottom Left / Bottom Right.

  • Delay appearance: Seconds to wait after the page loads before the popup appears, 0–60 seconds.

  • Frequency: Days before the popup appears again after a shopper closes it, 1–30 days.

  • Content alignment: Left / Center / Right.

  • Popup position: Bottom Left / Center / Bottom Right / Full screen.

    • Center: A box in the middle of the screen, with the image on the left.

    • Full screen: Covers the whole screen, with the content on the left and the image on the right. On mobile, it shows like Center.

    • Bottom Left and Bottom Right: A smaller box in the corner, without the image, so shoppers can keep browsing.

  • Color scheme: Accent 1 / Accent 2 / Accent 3 / Background 1 / Background 2 / Background 3 / Inverse.

  • Show on homepage only: When on, the popup only appears on your home page.

3. Block settings

Heading block

  • Heading: The popup's title.

  • Heading size: H1 / H2 / H3 / H4 / H5 / H6.

  • Width: Maximum width of the heading, 200–600px.

Text block

  • Text: A short description of what subscribers get.

  • Text style: Body / Subtitle / Uppercase.

  • Width: Maximum width of the text, 200–600px.

Background image block

You can add one. The image fills the area behind the popup's text and form.

  • Image: The background image.

  • Image overlay opacity: Darkens the image so text stays readable, 0–100%.

  • Image focal point: The part of the image to keep in view.

Email form block

You can add one.

  • Show name field: Adds a Name field above the email field. The name is saved as the customer's first name.

  • Button label: The submit button text.

After a shopper subscribes, the page reloads and the popup shows a thank-you message.

Teaser button block

You can add one.

  • Button label: A small button in the bottom-left corner that appears after a shopper closes the popup. Clicking it opens the popup again. Its close icon hides it for 30 days.

4. Tips

  • Offer a reason to sign up, such as "Get 10% off your first order", and create the matching code in Shopify admin > Discounts.

  • With Center, upload an Image. Otherwise a placeholder illustration fills the image area.

  • A Delay appearance of 5–10 seconds lets shoppers see your store before the popup appears.

  • To find subscribers from this popup, filter Customers by the popup-newsletter tag.
